There was a time when television broadcasts were only available Over The Air (OTA) and quality reception required a roof top antenna. With a good roof top antenna (and a little luck) you could receive 3 or sometimes 4 different channels for several hours a day. Late night television was reserved for technicians’ test patterns and high pitched noises.
You had to invest some money in a television, you had to invest some money in an antenna and frequently you had to invest some money in installation, but from then on Television was FREE. Broadcasters sold air-time to advertisers and "Commercials" paid the bill.
For decades OTA television languished with only 3 or 4 channels available anywhere that you went. Nothing changed, nothing developed and the effort went nowhere. We got bored and the hole was created for the development of Cable television. With Cable we could get 6 or maybe 12 channels and the industry exploded. In no time at all, antennas were disconnected and replaced by Cable television service. Cable subscribers had to pay a monthly fee for the service but that was okay, there were more choices.
Today Cable Systems offer hundreds of channels and Satellite Television like DirecTV offer even more. The choices are great and the ability to surf hundreds of channels can be very impressive. The monthly fees however, can also be very impressive. Somewhere between $50-100 or more monthly is common place. But what are the choices, an antenna and 3 or 4 channels?
Finally, after MANY decades, OTA television is making a resurgence. Free TV has always been available, the same 3 or 4 channels have always been there but now it is considerably more. Digital TV has opened up the bandwidth for many more simultaneous broadcasts then we have known.
The Portland/Vancouver area currently enjoys ALLOT of choices in OTA broadcast in Digital Quality and High Definition at NO CHARGE. The advertisers still pay the bill.

1) A Digital Converter Box connected to an older Television with an NTSC (analog) tuner
2) A good Roof Top antenna (which can often be mounted out of sight in an attic or crawl space)
And you have 22 channels of FREE TV.
Sure, you can beat the number of channels, but you cannot beat the price.
